Madras Veterinary College, Chennai

Madras Veterinary College came into existence in the year 1903 on the 1st of October and it is acting as a constituent unit of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. It is the fourth veterinary institution in the nation and even though it is the fourth institution, it is the first to get affiliation from a university and soon after getting affiliation, the institution became a constituent unit of the University of Madras in the year 1935. Later in the year 1974, the college was affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and became a constituent unit of the university on 1976.


Courses offered:

Prior to the year 1991, the Madras Veterinary College followed non-semester pattern of education and after this year, the college shifted to semester pattern of education for UG and PG courses. The list of courses offered by the Madras Veterinary College is given below:

• Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences

• Master of Veterinary Sciences

• Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Sciences

Eligibility requirements:

Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences:

For seeking admission to the B.V. Sc course, candidates must have completed their higher secondary course with botany or biology, zoology, physics and chemistry subjects in academic stream of fisheries/poultry of dairy courses in vocational stream. The minimum required marks in these courses will be decided according to the norms issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu from time to time.

Master of Veterinary Sciences:

For this course, candidates with UG degree in veterinary science from a recognized university are eligible to apply.

Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Sciences:

For this course, candidates with PG degree in veterinary science from a recognized university are eligible to apply.

Library at Madras Veterinary College is one of the prestigious assets with a collection of more than 35000 books and 30,000 journals. The library is provided with latest facilities like video library, microfilm, microfitche, CD ROMs and reprography. There is facility for online and offline literature searches in the library.
